Report for installation of water filter at the community hall of Kampung Orang Asli (Orang Asli Village) at Jalan Gombak, Selangor for Rotary Club of Pantai Valley

Date: 25th April 2007
Prepared by Rotarian James Tan
On the 30th March 2007, Rotary Club of Pantai Valley (RCPV) in collaboration of Datuk Dr Rahman Ismail (Member of Parliament for the District of Gombak) and the Fun Stompers have installed a water filter at the community hall of Kampung Orang Asli (Orang Asli Village) at Jalan Gombak, Selangor.
The Fun Stompers contributed to the project. Datuk Dr Rahman Ismail was instrumental in identifying the suitable location and community in need of such water filter.
Our first visit to Kampung Orang Asli Jalan Gombak was on the 21st March 2007 and our team consist of our RCPV President Chan Chee Hong, Rotarian James Tan, Special Assistants to Member of Parliament of Gombak
Our visit was well received by the Village Chief Tok Padin who kindly showed us the suitable location and briefly explained to us about his village of approximately 1000 people.
After the first visit, Rotarian James Tan proceeded to call for quotations from more than 3 suppliers of such water filters. Based on the comparison of the various types and brands available, he chose the ‘Waterco’ brand of micron deep bed filter supplied by the company called ‘Watershoppe’. This filter is encased in a fibre glass body and the filter body consists of graded volcanic fine sand from Australia.

On the 30th March 2007, Rotarian James Tan along with the a plumber visited the site at the Kampung Orang Asli and immediately started installation after confirming various technical details pertaining to the pressure of the water source. The installation took a whole day as additional piping arrangement was required to tap the water from a source approximately 40 feet away. Logistic for the materials and tools was also a challenge as the community hall can only be reached by foot for about 300 feet away after crossing a very old steel cable pedestrian bridge over the Gombak River. Fortunately, there was electric supply to speed up various processes and installation completed at 5pm on the same day. We have managed to train a few village locals on the maintenance of the filter.
The completion of the Water Filter is well received by the locals and the children. Rotary Club of Pantai Valley is pleased with our achievement in providing clean water to the community of Kampung Orang Asli Jalan Gombak. end.
